Gertie & Willie

I’m intrigued by the setting here. The lighting and the ground make it look like it’s an outdoor studio. And the backdrop looks more like a roll of vintage wallpaper than a typical studio backdrop. In fact, it looks like that backdrop has been placed in front of a typical scenic backdrop, making it much busier visually than I’m used to. I wonder if this is an itinerant photographer. I did a quick search for the photographers, Watts & Davidson, and didn’t find anything. This is a cabinet card (4.25 x 6.5 inches), and the only other information is the penciled names on the back, Gertie & Willie, who presumably are the attractive couple pictured here. They’re making their own contributions to the visual busyness of the picture, with all her vertical lines in the pleats and ribbons, and his mash-up of plaid (jacket and vest) and stripes (pants). I once again find myself wondering what it all looked like in color.

  1. As you say, Watts & Davidson might have been itinerant. It’s also possible they left the studio for the day and set up a backdrop at a county fair or something. I think many studio photographers did that when opportunities arose.

The ribbon on Gertie’s dress is a nice touch. It adds some levity. Despite their serious expressions, I think Gertie and Willie were out to have a good time.

  2. It is interesting that he has the top button of his jacket closed around his neck and the remainder of the jacket is unbuttoned. His shirt is also fascinating.

  3. Hey Matt, Linda Thyssen has restarted her blog, “From Yore With Love.” She has a great collection. I’m curious what your opinion would be on the date of this one: Master tailor class.
