Woman in Painesville, Ohio

I guess I’ve developed a real taste for these little cartes de visite lately, particularly the ones that show the person’s full body. There’s a directness and simplicity to them that somehow make them feel like more of a window to the past than some other styles of vintage photo, at least to me. This CDV is by F. Clapsadel of Painesville, Ohio. I think the F. stands for Frederick. If you’re interested, here is the back (click to enlarge).

  1. Her dress is really lovely. This would be early 1860s, taken during the Civil War, or possibly before it started in April 1861. Revenue stamps were required from August 1864 until August 1866. I don’t think this cdv was made after that.

    • I agree about the dress, and about the likely date. There’s no stamp on this one, but in general, I love the way revenue stamps help with dating pictures.
