This is a little snapshot (about 2.5 x 3.25 inches) that won’t win any awards for artistry, but is still a lot of fun to look at. Written on the back is “Helena Curtis / Marie Holt / Yosemite, July 1919”. Part of the fun comes from looking at those outfits and imagining hiking in them, though I’m sure it must have felt very freeing and modern to wear something other than a long skirt. It’s also fun to see how much the women seem to be enjoying themselves. Yosemite is a spectacular place today, so I can only imagine how extraordinary it must have seemed after the sort of journey it would take to get there in 1919, and after seeing it for the first time in living color.

Their outfits look loose and comfortable, but their boots don’t look anything like modern hiking boots.
I’ve visited a few parks out west, but not Yosemite. Maybe one day!
Agreed. I wonder how strenuous their hiking was. They look like they’re game to try.
And yes, I hope you make it to Yosemite some day, though it’s hardly the only beautiful park in the world, as I’m sure you know.
