Boy with a toy sheep

This little carte de visite isn’t especially unusual, except that the toy sheep is something I don’t remember seeing before. It feels like such a specific item that I wonder if it’s the boy’s own toy, rather than a studio prop. It’s interesting how realistic the sheep is, rather than cartoony. The photographer is E. Zwarg in Leipzig, Germany. I believe it’s Edmund Zwarg. I struggled to read the fancy script used for his name, and had to search on the address to figure it out. 1. Unlike so many children’s outfits, his looks comfortable. And that IS a great sheep.

    • Yes, definitely a comfy-looking smock he’s got on. And as much as I like the sheep, I can’t help wondering why a sheep, of all animals. A super lazy internet search seems to indicate that farm animals were popular toys back then, which makes sense.
