Here’s another simple little carte de visite image showing a man standing there. But looking at his handsome face, I noticed his unusual collar, and started to pay closer attention. Is that a uniform of some sort? Oh, and look, there’s a posing stand peeking out from behind his feet. And those shoes! Is the light hitting them strangely, or are they really as filthy or scuffed as they seem? Intrigued, I brought it home and enlarged it. Only then did I notice the fancy design sewn into the sleeves. I assumed the arm-akimbo pose was meant to convey his confidence, but now I think it’s also intended to display the sleeves. By the way, I think the photographer is C. P. Geel, if I’m reading the old-timey font correctly. The internet tells me there was also a photographer named W. Burmain Geel in Weymouth at a different address. Relatives? Coincidence?
