Mad River is a river in northern California, along with a little town of the same name. It’s a funny name, actually derived from an incident in which somebody was angry, which makes it even funnier. I’m sure I’ve driven by it a couple times as I’ve traveled north, so I’m surprised the name didn’t stick in my mind. Meanwhile, here are three photos, all from the same page in a photo album. (I didn’t remove them to scan them.) They’re each about 4.5 x 2.75 inches. I love the top picture because, besides being pretty, it looks so relaxing. But little Mahlon is obviously having a great time, as can be seen in this one [click to enlarge]:

And here Gilbert and Mahlon are again, I’m guessing later the same day (though in any case the same month, October 1939), with Gilbert showing the fish they caught, and Mahlon showing some leg. The album has other pictures of Mahlon and Daddy fishing at different times and different locations. I might share them at some point, but for now, this little set felt right.
