This 5 x 3.5-inch photo comes with no information. It sort of looks like a news photo or a bit of mid-century street photography, but it could just as easily be a discard. I like it, though, with the almost geometric sweep of people up the left side under the looming roof, and the sun glowing down from the right. I don’t know what the setting is. It has the feel of a race track, but I could be off base. To me, the anonymity of the image lends to the intrigue. And, as always, the voyeur in me likes to stare at an assortment of people. Here they are, everyday people, dressed well enough to be seen in public, but probably not expecting to get their picture taken. And though they’re all just standing there, they’re all doing something (reading, looking at the camera or away from it, etc.), which makes the image feel like it’s bubbling with a certain low-level energy. I also think it’s amusing that none of the people is looking at whatever it is they all came there to look at.

  1. My thought is that it’s a horse racing track. Likely the reason that the spectators are looking at printed pages. Seeing what horses and handicaps are coming up. I too am intrigued how well dressed they are. Times have changed. People wear t-shirts and shorts even to “the theatah”.
