Tintype of a gruff little boy

This 2.5 x 4-inch tintype amuses me. Somebody decided to try to get this boy’s portrait, though the expression on his face makes him look like he’s only going to endure the process a moment or two longer. His hair was styled as well as could be managed, and I’m guessing that outfit is the most respectable thing he’d tolerate. He certainly wasn’t going to be bothered with anything as fancy as shoes. That funny cross-legged pose looks very forced, and not only is he barefoot, but his bare legs are rather bruised, suggesting his ordinary pursuits lean towards the rough-and-tumble. In any case, the portrait was accomplished. I hope he appreciated it later.
