Woman in mining gear

This 4×5-inch photo comes with no information (name, place, date, etc.). Shall we assume she’s an actual miner, not just costumed as one? It doesn’t seem to be a terribly old photo. If this is in the U.S., then it’s probably no earlier than the 1970s, given the history of women in mining I found here. I wondered if she had long dreamed of going into the mines, or if she was simply taking whatever job she could to make ends meet. But given her strong, confident look, I’m guessing her decision to be a miner wasn’t a huge stretch.

  1. Wow, very cool photo! Wish we knew who she was.

  2. Her face bears a strong resemblance to your Great-baba Stepahin.

  3. Wow, amazing photo. From her eyeglasses and the room decor, I would think this is late 50’s-60’s. The boots seem older, but maybe they were still making them for work purposes, or maybe she’s just wearing old boots. I was concerned that the headlamp doesn’t seem to have a bulb in it, but then I found out they didn’t use bulbs–I think it might actually have been aflame. I guess that seems obvious, but I hadn’t realized. I found a sort of similar one on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/147071250691

    • I agree, my initial impression was that it was 1950s-60s, but the history I linked made me think maybe it was later, assuming this is the US, and assuming that history gives a full picture. I guess maybe she’s more concerned with putting food on the table than being fashion-forward.
