Gingham girl from Cohoes, NY

What it is:

Photo (2.5 x 3.75 inches) mounted on a cardboard backing/frame (3.5 x 5.25 inches).

What I know about it:

Photographer is Union Studio of Cohoes, New York.  Otherwise undated and unidentified.

Comments:

It seems she is perched like a doll on a side table, outfitted in what looks like gingham armor, her hair in sausage ringlets, standing in front of lace that’s been artfully tacked to a stucco wall.    She’s adorable, but she looks like she’s grabbing hold of the lace for security.

  1. I am in absolute love with this blog! I recently found out that my great grandfather had a studio around the early 1900’s. Recently around town I found 6 of his photos at two antique shops, this rekindled my love of the old portraiture like above. Please, please, please check my recent blog posts about my great grandfather and please keep in touch. LOVE THIS BLOG!

    • Thank you! I’m so glad you are enjoying my blog. I checked out yours, and the posts about your great-grandfather’s photography are fun. What a treat to find some in a store! Stories like that are wonderful. My grandfather was a studio photographer, too, and even though I’m not posting his photos here, it’s still great to have some examples of his work. Like you, I think that is part of what has kindled my interest in photography. As I sort through my photos, I’ll keep a special eye out for any by your great-grandfather. It seems unlikely that I’ll find any, but stranger things have happened, right?

  2. Yeah that be great. His photos are marked as penny st. Studio York pa “by the high school”. I bought one the other day that I thought was his bases off of the backdrop but it’s not. I would be more than happy to send it to you for your collection if you would like. Btw may I add you to my blogroll?

    • Hi Chris, thanks for the offer. I’m always happy to have new photos for my collection, but I wouldn’t want to inconvenience you. If you post it on your blog, I can enjoy it there, too. And yes, feel free to add me to your blogroll. I’m still new enough to blogging that I have to figure all that stuff out, too! lol
