Slim shovels for freedom and happiness

What it is:

Snapshot measuring approx. 2.5 x 3.75 inches.

What I know about it:

No date or formal identification, but this is “Slim” of Bert and Slim.  You can probably read the handwriting, but it says:  “On the Ball” working for our freedom, and the happiness, we shall have, your “Slim” ALWAYS XXX

Comments:

It’s cold and rainy here in San Francisco, but I’ve been hearing reports of much worse weather from people around the country.  People have been dealing with snows, flooding, etc.  In honor of their struggles to dig out, here is Slim to the rescue!  He was, I believe, in the Air Force, and I have a picture or two of him stationed someplace warm, but here he is in the bitter snow.  Despite the hardships, he is keeping his spirits about him and working to make the world a better place, one shovelful at a time.  It’s a little slice of inspiration I could surely use some days.

  1. I wonder if the “Chicago” on his hat brim refers to where he is–I would think soldiers would typically put where they’re from on their clothes, but I can imagine that he’s shoveling snow in Chicago.

    • Oh, wow, I’m embarrassed to admit I hadn’t even noticed that. Your guess makes sense. Or maybe he’ll be on an aircraft carrier called “Chicago” or something. That might be worth looking up. And if I ever try to figure out who Bert and Slim are beyond their nicknames, it could be a clue. Thanks for pointing it out!

  2. I hope you have more photos of Bert and Slim, as I look forward to seeing them!
