Young man with a crooked tie

What it is:

Cabinet card measuring 4.25 x 6.5 inches.

What I know about it:

Photographer is Louis H. Rudolph of Chicago, Illinois.  Otherwise undated and unidentified.

Comments:

A post from a few days ago brought up the topic of men with crooked ties, and whether it was a deliberate look or mere sloppiness.  Here’s another example.  On the one hand, this look is definitely the exception to the rule, but on the other hand it’s hard to imagine that nobody suggested he straighten his tie.  This is one of two duplicates I have of this cabinet card, so clearly somebody gave the go-ahead on this look.  By the way, click here to see the wonderful graphic design on the back.

  1. The lad has some wild looking eyes. Perhaps having to sit still for a long exposure or maybe he was just a few days away from going completely mad. I’m talking bat shit crazy with foam coming out of his mouth.

  2. If the tie is askew the tail is less likely to drag in one’s soupbowl?? Practical fashion??

  3. What is it exactly that people look at when they’re having their picture taken? How did the ‘Watch the birdie’ expression come into use? Great title though – like ‘girl with a pearl earring’.

    • Good question, I don’t know about the “birdie” expression, I might have to look that up. Thanks about the title. Now that you mention it, it sounds a bit like a mystery story title, as if the crooked tie is a clue.
