Since one of my regular readers identified herself as a descendant of the photographer B. B. Tiffany, I decided to keep a special eye out for any Tiffany photos while going through my boxes. And lo! here’s another one! Every once in a while I come across a face in one of these old photos that somehow looks modern. I’m not sure how to explain it, but perhaps you know what I mean? This, to me, is one of those faces.

I definitely know what you mean about the “modern face” and I agree with your assessment that this gentleman has one of those faces. In addition, his tuxedo, shirt and tie also has a modern type look. In fact, I think I may have rented the shirt he is wearing last week when i had to attend a black tie wedding. Leaving this comment got me thinking about the history of tuxedoes so after I post this comment I think I’m going to google “tuxedoes”.
Thanks! I’m glad you know what I mean. I think his hairstyle contributes to the modern feel, too. And you’re right, there is much about the outfit that feels contemporary, though I’ll leave it to more of a costume expert than I am to point out the specifics. I’ll be curious to hear if you find anything interesting.
Thank you for posting this! 🙂 I think what makes this one look more modern is the fact that his hair isn’t all combed or greased down. Most of my old “posed” pictures have very formal hairstyles with nary a hair out of place. It is only the candid ones that show the hair as it would naturally be. Definitely brings out the gentler disposition.
Tiffany died in 1924, not sure when he stopped doing photography professionally but it was well before then. If I knew how, I’d post a picture of him for you.
