The pose and expression seem to say: “stop fiddling with the camera and take the picture, already!”
Funny, I was thinking he looked proud, but now that you say it, he does look a little impatient, too.
I see it as awkwardness about having his picture taken, kind of a “What are YOU lookin’ at?” defiance.
I can see that, too. I love the way everybody has a different interpretation of this image.
Steinbeck, yes. Or John Dos Passos.
Great, another author to add to my reading list. 😉
The USA trilogy by Dos Passos is a compelling part of American history.
