Okay, I’m not 100% certain that this is the same vacation, or even the same woman, but I think it is. One of the family heirlooms I have is a diary that my great-grandmother kept on a 1957 vacation to England and Wales from their home in Ohio. While she would have been older than the woman pictured here, I’m guessing it’s roughly the same time period. (Feel free to let me know if you disagree.) Among the other interesting things about it is the time she spent getting there, since, after all, she went by boat. It can sometimes be easy to forget how much things have changed in such a relatively short period of time. Our lady vacationer is traveling by boat. She’s armed with a camera. Look how nicely she’s dressed, even just to hang out on the beach!
Cruises were very popular during this time. Is this picture one from your family album?
Hi Mrs. P. No, she’s not family of mine (that I know of). I don’t know who she is. One of my self-imposed rules for my blog is to not post my own family photos.
So, did you have a deja vu moment when you saw this picture? I know this place?
Oh, no, nothing like that. It’s just things like that diary and these photos that remind me how common boat travel was in those days, but they aren’t otherwise connected.
I think it is definitely the same woman. And boy howdy, have things changed!
Yes, they have. Some big ways, some small, but many changes.
