Sloe-eyed family

This is a 5×7 photo with some paper remnants around the edges that suggest it had previously been glued into a cardboard frame. It’s a typical family portrait, but I was captivated by the way they all have such mesmerizing eyes. Looking closer, I became intrigued by other details, like the racket almost hidden in the shadows at the lower left, and the way the jacket on the right is such a sporty cut for one seemingly made of tweed. I noticed that all but the child on the left are wearing jewelry, and the seated man has two pens in his breast pocket. And I’m a little puzzled by the way the child on the left appears to be wearing a luggage tag. I’m sure that’s not what it is, but enlarging it doesn’t help much. I’m guessing it’s some sort of rope or chain tucked into a pocket that happens to have a white pocket square in it, though I’m really not sure.

  1. Yeah, I see a ropey lanyard kind of thing with something attached (watch? key? penknife?) going into his pocket, and a strangely tall white handkerchief poking out of the same pocket. I’ve never seen a handkerchief stick out that far, so I began a search for vintage children’s handkerchiefs to see if it was ever a particular style, but that promises to be a rabbit hole.
