This little carte de visite image was produced by the New York Gallery at 25 Third Street in San Francisco. Since I live in San Francisco, it’s always fun to find vintage photos from here. I have at least two others from this studio, which you can see here. And here you’ll see a page that somebody put together showing other images, and indicating that there were either multiple owners at multiple locations, or multiple studios with the same name. It also shares a rather lurid newspaper article about the photographer’s demise. As for this photo, her headband-hairnet combination is something I’m not used to seeing. It looks like her cheeks are lightly tinted. Also, um… is she pregnant?
