Man and six boys in San Francisco

I was looking through my photos with half a mind to find one appropriate for Father’s Day, when I pulled this one out, though I think it’s more likely a photo of a teacher with six students than a man with his six sons. It’s a real photo post card, with the paper manufacturer’s markings (AZO, four triangles pointing up) dating it to 1904-1918. Printed on the back is “1311 Fillmore St, San Francisco”, which an internet search indicates was a photo studio called the Premium Postal Studio. As you can see, somebody felt the need to annotate this image. Along the bottom is written “A beauty contest”. Along the left side is written “Let the little nurse see this and she will faint away.” Along the top and down the right side is written “1st prize the [illegible] Notice the collar + tie + the pretty gray suit / that’s the suit he had his picture taken in with sister Mazie”. That last note is pointing to the kid standing in the upper right, though they all look well turned out to me. The man appears to have something hanging around his neck and tucked into his jacket pocket. I’m not sure what that is. What I especially like about this picture is the way they are all carefully posed, and yet they all appear to be relaxed and having a good time.

  1. Hi Matt

I absolutely adore this photo! The annotations are superb and the lads look like they are having a blast.

I’ve been well out of the blog loop for years now but always keep an eye on your pics when they come to my inbox.

    I hope you are well.

    • Hey Kate, great to hear from you! I go in and out of blogging, too. Thanks for continuing to follow, and I’m glad you like this one. 🙂

  2. I love this! I suspect the man’s string goes to spectacles.
