Posing with plinths

Here are two little carte de visite images showing men posing with plinths. (Plinth? Pedestal? I’m not even sure what to call these, to be honest.) The man on the left looks as much like a rigid column as the thing he’s leaning on (he appears to be using a posing stand), while the guy on the right is giving us a more relaxed, casual vibe. The pose on the left looks much more formal and proper, while man on the right looks like he could be leaning on the bar in a tavern. I like them both. There’s no information about the one on the left, but the one on the right is photographed by J. Oman of Newark. The internet can’t seem to agree on whether this is Newark in New Jersey, Ohio, or England. (Most of the CDVs from this seller came from England or elsewhere in Europe, so I’d guess England if I had to… but I don’t have to.)

  1. Gotta love a plinth! πŸ˜„

  2. I’d guess that the one on the left is American or Canadian and the one on the right is British. The neoclassical plinth on the right would be unusual in this country, although not unheard-of. The long coat and full beard of the man on the left seem more typically American. Of course, I could be wrong on all counts! It’s fun to speculate. Great idea to post them together for comparison.

    • Good points. And as long as we aren’t able to prove otherwise, then we’ll just assume you’re correct. πŸ™‚ And thanks, I’ve been finding myself wanting to post more photos together for comparison. I often don’t have much to say about a single photo, while comparing multiple photos stirs up more thoughts, at least for me.

  3. I was fooled by that painted window on the left!
