Couple in Winfield, Kansas

This is another gift from my friend Jennifer. It’s a pretty portrait, but what I especially love is that the woman doesn’t just have feathers in her hat, she has the whole bird! When I enlarged it, I noticed that the pin on the man’s lapel appears to show a face. That might be a memorial pin, commemorating a lost loved one. The photo is about 4×3 inches, mounted to a cardboard frame/backing that have mostly cropped from this scan. The photographer is George H. Dresser of Winfield, Kansas. Some information about him can be found here.

  1. OMG this is fantastic Matt. What a fabulous friend to give this to you! Yes, the man is definitely wearing a mourning brooch. And that poor bird. . . I’ve never seen something quite like it. I want a hat like that for one of my photobooth strips.

    • Hi Katherine! Glad you like it. Yes, that hat is quite something. I knew whole birds were occasionally included in hats back then, but I think this is the first one I have in my collection.
