Family visit on the farm

I saw my friend Christine today, and she surprised me with some vintage photos she’d gotten for me recently. This is one of them. It’s pretty small, a bit more than 3×2 inches, and it always amazes me that people would make such tiny copies of images that have so much detail. There’s no information about this one, so I made assumptions in calling this a family visit. But the pose suggests family, or at least people who are close and familiar, and the nice hat and coat of the larger woman in the middle and the little girl next to her suggest that they have either just arrived or are about to leave. Contrast that with the woman in the apron who doesn’t look like she’s going anywhere. What I didn’t realize until I enlarged the image is that the ground is covered in snow, and somebody threw down what appears to be a rug or blanket for them to stand on, presumably to protect the ladies’ nice shoes from the wet. Perhaps the closeness of the pose isn’t just about how much they care for each other, but also how much space there was for them to stand off the snow.

  1. Now that Gene’s seen it enlarged, he says he was wrong to suggest it wasn’t worth buying!

    • Ha! I’m glad he thinks so. I’ve sometimes bought photos in the hopes that they’ll be more interesting once enlarged, but without really knowing at the time. I always wonder if people sat around looking at photo albums with magnifying glasses.

  2. What do you think that square board on the porch was used for?
