These are all little cartes de visite. I’ve shared the first three before (here and here). But I realized I had one or two more by this same photographer, W. Elliot of Penrith, England, all bought from the same store. So I went back to that store, dug through their bins of photos, and found a couple more. The owners keep telling me they have lots more photos in the back that they haven’t put out yet, so there might be more from this photographer, but for now this is what I could find. They are obviously of varying quality. I don’t really have anything profound to say about this set, but for some reason I decided they belonged together, so I got them. I don’t know what set of circumstances resulted in the available photos being all women. Penrith isn’t an enormous town, so perhaps some of these women knew each other. I see that four of the seven photos have the same distinctive flooring. And interestingly, the photographer had several different back designs, which you can see below (click to enlarge).

  1. In the lower set of four, the lady at upper right looks slightly amused. The lady at lower left could be in her eighties, which would mean she was born in the 1780s.

    • Agreed on both points. I know it’s basically an illusion of ink on paper, but when I look at very old people in very old photos, it’s hard not to feel like I’m peeking at history, and to wonder what they know.
