Patterns, dress and wall

When I got this little 2.75 x 4.5 inch photo, I was amused by the way the pattern in her dress mimicked the pattern in the brick wall behind her, a bit of inadvertent visual playfulness. When I enlarged it, I realized the pattern wasn’t really all that similar. But the rest of the photo started to take on a life of its own, with the hard sunlight bringing out all sorts of interesting details and contrasting patterns, like the soft swoop of the vines on the wall, or the dissonance of the man’s diagonally striped tie. Things like jewelry and facial expressions were clearer when I enlarged it and took a closer look. They went from being three random people standing in front of a brick wall to three people who seemed to have distinct personalities and a sense of purpose, reminding me that even a fairly unremarkable portrait like this can make me wonder who they are.

  1. That’s quite a long chain she’s wearing. And his striped tie is much shorter than ties today. Do you think they worked together?
