Antique reprint
What it is:
Cabinet card measuring 4.25 x 6.5 inches.
What I know about it:
Photographer is Wheeler of Richford, Vermont. Written on the back in pen: Joseph Seymour father of Rachael Anna Seymour copied in 1893 from an old photograph.
Comments:
Normally I avoid posting (or even buying) newer reproductions of vintage photographs. But when the reproduction is well over a century old, that’s something different. The funny thing is, there’s something about the framing and general image quality (including a scratch in his hair) that do indeed make it look like a copy of an even older photograph, but I’m not sure I would have come to that conclusion without the note written on the back. By the way, when I say the photographer was Wheeler, that just means that Wheeler made the reproduction and assembled the cabinet card. I have no idea who took the original photo of Mr. Seymour. Perhaps the original was the work of Wheeler as well. Or it’s possible that Mr. Seymour never set foot anywhere near Richford in his life.
