Woman of color in white

What it is:

Real photo post card measuring approx. 3.5 x 5.5 inches.

What I know about it:

Photographer is D. W. Faulk of Coatesville, Pennsylvania.  Otherwise undated and unidentified.

Comments:

Looking at this young woman, I feel some obligation to make profound comments about race and gender and history, but my thoughts just keep coming back to how pretty this all is.

  1. Here, here. She is very pretty. Funnily enough I just posted 3 African American tintypes on my Mugshots blog.

    • Yes, they’re great, I just saw them. I wondered about something, though. Your notes indicate the photos were from the U.S., but would you, there in Australia, have called them African American otherwise? No right or wrong answer, I’m just curious about the use of that term outside America.

  2. Everything’s lovely, down to the painted backdrop.
