What it is:

Photo measuring 8 x 10 inches.

What I know about it:

Photographer is Bowdern.  Written on the back in pencil is Claire Denne / Gallup1810R

I spent the evening at a birthday party with a bunch of old theater friends, which put me in the mind of show biz, so that when it came time to prepare my daily blog post, I thought of the various publicity photos I have for performers.  I don’t have many, because even though they can be fun, it’s not a genre I’ve focused on collecting.  Most of the ones I have showed up when I bought larger lots of random old photos.  My preference as a collector has tended to be towards “real” people, portraits of unknowns that give us a glimpse of what life was like in a different time, rather than the artificial images of theatrical portraits.  But after all, isn’t it instructional to look at these anyway, for doesn’t popular culture reflect the dreams and values of each different era?  Not to mention that our Miss Denne here largely qualifies as an unknown these days anyway.  (I did a quick Google search and found another publicity photo, as well as a reference to something called the Claire Denne Dancers, but no real information.)  This photo tells me that while much has changed, much hasn’t.  Performers still have to publicize themselves, and you still have to be a real trouper to make it.  In any case, it’s a delightful photo, so enjoy!

  1. As a young girl, my cousin danced in a Claire Denne Dance Review at Denver’s Elitch Gardens in 1930. We have a photo of my cousin in her dress.
