Man in hat and coat
Click here to view it larger.
What it is:
Real photo post card measuring approx. 3.25 x 5.25 (the bottom has been irregularly trimmed).
What I know about it:
Undated and unidentified. The paper manufacturer’s markings (AZO, two triangles up, two down) narrow the date range to 1918-1930.
Comments:
I’m always intrigued when people choose to wear outdoor clothing for indoor portraits. Is this man especially proud of this coat for some reason? Is there something wrong with the clothing he has on underneath? He’s shot full-length in a way that highlights what he’s wearing, when we have to assume the photographer would have had the option of shooting it another way. The fact that the chair is on wheels implies flexibility on the part of the photographer. And yet there’s this guy, looking like he just came in off the street, like he rushed in late and the photographer didn’t have time for the sitter to change before the next client. In any case, he looks sharp.
And funny how the coat is now back in fashion – for the ladies. 🙂
The fashion gods work in strange and mysterious ways. 🙂
With a belt just below his nipples. That was the style then, same for pants, worn nipple high.
Yes, I look at some of those pictures of chest-high pants, and some look sleek and fashionable, and others just look (to my modern eyes) like they don’t know how to wear pants.
Nuthugers.
