Woman from Providence in a ruffly dress

Click here to view it larger.

What it is:

Photo (2.5 x 3.25 inches) mounted to a cardboard frame/backing (approx. 4.75 x 6 inches; I have cropped some of the backing from this scan).

What I know about it:

Photographer is Rose & Sands of Providence, Rhode Island, and New York, New York.  (This photo was purchased with a bunch of others that all came from Providence, so I believe that was the location of this photo.)  Otherwise undated and unidentified.

Comments:

Such an interesting face, and such an intriguing combination of fussy dress with unfussy hair.  By the way, there’s a tiny optical illusion here that fooled me for a moment when I was looking at the enlarged scan.  There’s a scratch in the photo across her chin that leads to the place where her right (our left) cheek meets her collar.  Her cheek curves up in a smooth arc from there to where it meets her ear.  I actually thought the photo had been torn along the scratch and repaired, since that little arc of her cheek looked like it had been fractionally displaced inward.  But closer inspection showed that the scratch was the only damage, and I realized what I was looking at.  Silly me, right?
