Girl with a chair, arm akimbo
Click here to view it larger.
What it is:
Cabinet card measuring approx 4.25 x 6.5 inches. The edges have been trimmed, possibly to fit a frame.
What I know about it:
Nothing! Undated and unidentified. (There might have been photographer’s information in the borders that was trimmed away.)
Comments:
In most ways this seems like a standard issue portrait for its time, a pretty teenage girl in a white dress, posing genteelly with a delicate chair against an ethereal backdrop. But her body language and her facial expression show a strength and determination that belie the standard mold, and make me admire her all the more.
Good commentary Matt, I see her exactly as you described.
Thanks, Mike!
What an unusual chair…delicate, indeed!
Yes, this is one of those instances where I wish I could see more of the scene.
