What it is:

Three cartes de visite (or CDV-sized cabinet cards), each measuring approx. 2.5 x 4.25 inches.

What I know about it:

Photographer is L. H. Borewitz of Wenden (now Cesis), Latvia.

Comments:

I ended up with eight different portraits from the same Latvian photographer.  I’ve already posted ones here and here.  I thought I’d post another one of the men, but I couldn’t decide which one, so I thought I’d just post the remaining three together.  I think they are interesting to compare and contrast.  I’m not sure if the old spelling of the new town name on the middle one indicates anything about its date, or perhaps the language spoken by its subject.  By the way, the image from the back appears on the two photos on the ends; the back of the middle card is blank.

  1. I love how each collar is very different. That should help in dating, if anyone has knowledge of the subject.

    • There are definitely readers with that sort of expertise. Hopefully someone will chime in. It’s fun to look at these three photos that appear so similar at first glance, and find such differences in detail.

  2. I love the man in the middle’s hair style.

  3. Great collection. I love they all resemble one another! Must be brothers?

    • Thanks, glad you like them! I think there’s a similarity in both the style of the portrait and in the style of their dress, but I wouldn’t have guessed they were brothers. Still, it’s hard to be sure.
