Woman from Georgia with unusual jewelry

Click here to view it larger.

What it is:

Cabinet card measuring 4.25 x 6.5 inches.

What I know about it:

Photographer is Wilson’s Studios of Savannah and Waycross, Georgia.  Otherwise undated and unidentified.

Comments:

The surface of this one is rather scuffed, but I find it interesting enough to share, anyway.  First of all, it’s one of the few older photos I have from the Deep South.  (Considering my rather random approach to accumulating photos, I’ve assumed the disproportionate number from the North is just a coincidence, but who knows.)  Also, there’s that piece of jewelry at her neck.  Perhaps it’s familiar to others, but I’ve never seen anything like it.  Is it her name?  The name of someone or something important to her?  I can’t quite make it out.  Click here for an enlargement if you want to take a crack at it.  And, of course, there’s that soft, gentle face with that wistful expression that always makes me take a second look.

  1. Thank you for sharing. This is such a beautiful portrait that brings us back in past .

  2. The brooch really is unusual for its time. It looks more 1970s than 1800s. I cannot make out what it says but it looks like it could be a foreign name.

  3. It looks like “Farlelech”, which makes no sense whatsoever, and doesn’t seem to exist on google (well, now it does. :)). Obviously a hand-made brooch. The tilt of her head is very interesting. I wonder what’s going behind those eyes….
