Men outside tents
Click here to view it larger.
What it is:
Photo (4.75 x 3 75 inches) mounted to a cardboard frame/backing (7 x 6 inches; I’ve cropped some of the backing from this scan).
What I know about it:
Nothing! Undated and unidentified.
Comments:
Part of what I find fascinating about this is the way such an unglamorous subject is given such a fancy treatment in the framing. I don’t really know what we’re looking at, though. For all I know, it could be anything from a traveling carnival to a mining camp. I guess life isn’t too hard if they’ve hauled in those rocking chairs in the left-hand tent.
Very cool photo. Maybe they were independent miners who struck it rich and wanted to commemorate the place they had their big find? Then again the fancy decorative edging on the tents could suggest something else. What, of course, is a mystery.
Miners who struck it rich, that’s a fun possibility.
Now that I look at it again, I think only one of those chairs is a rocking chair, but oh well.
I find the white wavy “framing” very distracting. My eyes keep focusing on the wavy white instead of the picture itself.
I know what you mean, though it was probably a pretty cool effect in its day.
I wish there were more clues!
I do, too! Of course, an expert might be able to look at it and recognize clues that aren’t obvious to me. Oh, well, I’ll just enjoy the mystery. 🙂
I really want these to be acrobats setting up before a show.
Ooh, now that you say so, I want that, too.
How intriguing! My first thought was “circus performers”.
That could be!
