What it is:

Carte de visite (or perhaps a CDV-sized cabinet card) trimmed to about 2.5 x 3 inches.

What I know about it:

Photographer is Mauritz Edlund of Stockholm, Sweden.  Otherwise undated and unidentified.

Comments:

It’s too bad somebody hacked the top of this off.  I would normally assume it’s to fit a frame, but then why not hack off the advertising at the bottom?  It throws off the whole balance of the framing, and wrecks the pretty design on the back.  Still, I thought he has a striking enough visage that you might enjoy seeing him, so here he is.  By the way, I found some other photos by this same photographer here.  Note the rocky coastline backdrop he uses when photographing sailors.  That’s the first time I’ve seen such an image in a studio backdrop.

  1. He is a very handsome classic Scandinavian type isn’t he?

  2. The collection you linked to is fascinating. I’d say yo have a very good example from that photographer and as you say it is a shame it has been cut down.

    • Thanks, glad you like it. I think it’s always interesting to put an individual photo into the context of the photographer’s overall work.
