What it is:

Cabinet card measuring 4.25 x 6.5 inches.

What I know about it:

Photographer is Ward of Fall River, Massachusetts.  Otherwise undated and unidentified.

Comments:

On a sweltering August day in 1892 in Fall River, Massachusetts, Lizzie Borden entered rhyme and lore by allegedly killing her father and stepmother with an axe.  (She was acquitted, but still presumed by most to be guilty.)  Here is another woman from, I believe, roughly the same time period, also in Fall River.  Does she look comfortable to you?  Can you imagine wearing that constricting dress in the summer heat?  Even her hair looks clenched.  I sometimes look at pictures like this and think it’s remarkable that more people back then didn’t snap.

  1. That wave in her hair would of taken some time to create as well. She couldn’t of been too happy when that was going on either. 🙂

  2. “even her hair looks clenched”. Indeed!
