I once saw a woman in a leopard skin coat walk into the cat house at a zoo, and I wondered if the leopards noticed or cared. I’m sure that, in general, the animals don’t mind what visitors are wearing, but obviously the people do. This photo was from a time when you wore a suit and hat even to the zoo. I don’t know what animal these men are looking at, but at least it seems to be a relatively large, open-air enclosure, as humane as such things ever are.
I love this picture! re: animal: polar bears?
Did I never tell you the story of the time I wore a (fake) snow-leopard-patterned coat to the San Francisco Zoo, and the snow leopards saw me and freaked out? My companion theorized that they were trying to find out how I escaped. Their enclosure was much nicer than this one, though, with natural ground and a bendable chain link fence that was more like a tent. You can see it a little bit in the background here (but mainly just SNOW LEOPARD!): http://tinyurl.com/afhcdhr
I’m glad you like the photo! Your story does ring a bell, now that you mention it, but I’m not sure. That must have been a weird feeling to have them react to your coat like that. And the leopard in that photo you linked is gorgeous. Yes, I was thinking along the lines of polar bear for the picture above. I do have a picture of a polar bear in my collection, but it’s not related to this.
This reminded me of when we would take you to the Pittsburgh Zoo as a young child. Your favorite animal was the hippopotamus. You would stare, mesmerized by the hippo, as long as you were permitted to stand there.
Yes, I remember that, though all these years later I don’t really understand what the fascination with the hippo was.
It’s those tiny wiggling ears.
🙂 Actually, I think I was fascinating by the way this mammoth beast would slowly rise to the surface and sink again, like a submarine. Though, looking back, I suppose it had to rise and sink rather than swim around because it’s pen was so small.
