What it is:
Photo measuring 2.75 x 4.5 inches.
What I know about it:
Written on the back in pen is Dolores Elizabeth Rasmusson / Age about 4 months old. There is a photo developer’s stamp on the back that is only semi-legible. It was developed by Canedy’s Camera Shop, though I can’t read a location. The only part of the date I can read is the year, 1929.
Comments:
My friend Christine [“harriedcostumer”], in addition to being a costumer, is a talented graphic designer. She has lately been doing the posters for a local theater company, and has borrowed some of my vintage photos for use in those designs. When that company did a production of The Member of the Wedding last year, I pulled out a bunch of photos that might be used for the poster, mostly featuring tomboyish girls in country settings, some with a younger boy, too. When the actress Julie Harris died yesterday, it made me think of the play, which had been her first great triumph, and I found the little stack of photos I had pulled out still lying around, all rejects for the project, but all photos I like anyway. (The one she used was a version of one I already posted, but with the mother expertly photoshopped out.) The photo above has, to me, a dreamy quality in the way the background fades into the light, and the girl’s bare feet give it a relaxed, intimate feel. I’m also intrigued by the border, since the handmade look of it gives it a personal feel.
