What it is:

Photo (slightly more than 3.75 x 5.5 inches) mounted to a cardboard frame/backing that has been poorly trimmed down (I’ve cropped the badly cut edges from this scan).

What I know about it:

Nothing!  Undated and unidentified.

I keep running across this photo, thinking it looks nice, thinking I should post it, but then setting it aside because I don’t know what to call it.  Silly of me, right?  Not that my titles are generally so marvelous, but I’ve already titled posts for generic couples, for couples with the man sitting and the woman standing, etc., etc.  I can’t refer to the sitter’s identity or location because these facts aren’t known.  They aren’t wearing bizarre clothes or crazy facial expressions, they aren’t in a strange setting, they aren’t striking wacky poses, they don’t seem more tense or relaxed than the average sitters, etc., etc.  And yet as I look at them, they are very much their own individuals, decent-looking people I’d be pleased to have as neighbors or in-laws, and I don’t find myself confusing them for anyone else in my collection.  So I feel I am somehow letting them down by not being able to summarize them distinctively in a title.  But after all, I like looking at them, and I thought you might, too, so here they are.

  1. Obviously shared genes. Mother and son? Nah, she’s too young. Sister and brother? Maybe, but quite an age gap. And why shoot the two without the intermediate siblings? Agreed: perhaps not the most magnificent of photographs, but one nonetheless able to give the mind a good tickling… Great posts, as always. I so enjoy this…

    • You think so? Hmm, that’s interesting. I was just assuming they were husband and wife, particularly given the pose, but I could be wrong.

  2. I don’t think they look very alike physically, but they sure are wearing similar expressions. They remind me a little of Bess and Harry Houdini.

  3. Well, actually, I do see a nose-resemblance, now that I look again.

    • They both look like they come from wholesome, hearty stock, but I agree, I wasn’t seeing so much of a genetic relationship as a marital one. (Of course, who knows, it could be both.)

  4. I vote for brother and sister…they look alike. Although… they say married couples start to look alike after a while. I tried to think of a clever title but… not easy when you have nothing to go on. I sympathize with you. All those photos; all those titles to come up with. 🙂

    • So interesting, these responses. I try to remember some twins I knew in high school, brothers who looked completely dissimilar even though they were twins. Relatives don’t necessarily look exactly alike. And one (or both) could be adopted.

  5. Although this is another couple, they are very different than some of the others. His skin is darker and his hair is curlier. It makes me wonder what country his ancestors came from. She is wearing a blouse that is simple in many ways but has an amazing bit of crocheted lace at the neck which brings out a more feminine feature in a woman who without it, appears very plain.

  6. And look at all the jewelry they’re wearing! He has a tie pin, and she has a bracelet, several rings, two pins and a long necklace! Agree with Mrs. P – the lace is quite lovely, but I think it’s probably tatted, not crocheted.

  7. I vote mother and son. He’s really young looking… Mayne 15? She’s old enough to be maybe 30. Or sister brother. But I still vote mother and son.
