Rita with her poinsettias
Click here to view it larger.
What it is:
Photo measuring 3.25 x 4.25 inches.
What I know about it:
Written on the back in pencil is 23rd Dec. ’44 Sat. A.M. / Pointsettias from Dadu [or Dadee, sorry, it’s hard to read that word]. Other photos of this girl indicate her name is Rita Marie Annette Brooks, that she’s four years old in this photo, and that she probably lives in a “Naval Housing Project” (she did in 1941, and these photos seem to show a similar setting).
Comments:
I think this is such a sweetly modest little photo of holiday cheer.
I believe, and you tell me if I am wrong, but she went on to be a lovely meter maid. The stuff of legends, actually.
I like it. I have no information to the contrary. 🙂
I have really enjoyed your winter themed/Christmas pics, Matt, as I do all your posts. Hope you have a wonderful celebration. Merry Xmas!
Thanks, Katherine! You, too!
Her outfit intrigues me – wide-bottomed pants or it is a long skirt? And a Madonna-like head scarf. Love the picture!
I agree, it’s hard to tell if these are her normal clothes or if this is some sort of holiday get-up. In the other pictures I have of her, she seems to be dressed “normally”.
Cute picture! How did you figure out her name?
Thanks! Don’t worry, I haven’t suddenly developed magical powers of telling people’s names. I have three or four photos of her (as far as I can tell). Her full name is written on the back of one of the other ones, along with her birth date.
🙂
Striking photo. Love it.
Thanks!
