With baby Craig, in Rome

Click here to view it larger.

What it is:

Photo measuring 5 x 3.5 inches.

What I know about it:

Written on the back is:  Craig at 4-1/2 months beside wrecked car in Rome.  The photo was developed with a date stamp indicating it’s a Kodachrome Print, dated October 1965.

Comments:

Often, the writing on the back of a photo helps clarify the image for me.  But in some cases, such as this one, I am left with more questions than before.  Shall we assume that the man is baby Craig’s father?  Were they on vacation in Rome, or did they live there, and the caption was written later?  Is this their car, or did they decide to pose with somebody else’s wreck?  Is the broken headlight the extent of the damage, or is there more that we’re not seeing?  In these days before seat belt laws, is this photo intended to show that Craig had a luckier escape than we might assume today?  Whatever is going on, I love the elegant colors, and the way its seemingly calm simplicity grows more edgy and offbeat the longer you stare at it.

  1. There’s also Rome, Georgia.

  2. I think Craig’s gleeful face is a clue. Did HE bust out that light??

    • Ha! Funny idea. But hey, I just spent the afternoon at a birthday party for a one-year-old. I’ve seen the mayhem kids that age can cause. 🙂

  3. […] this one, not just because it’s adorable, but because it’s obviously a companion to this one, which I found at the same store a few weeks before.  I wonder if there are others I overlooked, […]
